Kyshona blends blues, soul, rock and folk to express uplifting themes of hope and empowerment. Her 2024 album Legacy is a moving musical manifestation of her own genealogical research, incorporating choir performances and sermons from her family archive. The Boston Globe and The Tennessean have praised how Legacy plays with various genres originating in early African American history to call back to and honor Kyshona’s ancestors.
Kyshona began writing songs alongside the students and inmates under her care as a music therapist. She remains active in spreading the healing power of song through her organization Your Song, where she facilitates therapeutic songwriting sessions that encourage participants to process emotion, build self-esteem and manage stress. In 2023, she was featured in the PBS television show “Ear to the Common Ground,” where she sat down with fans to discuss voting rights in America.
She has collaborated with Adia Victoria and Margo Price, the latter which she appeared alongside on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. At the 2021 Newport Folk Festival, she sang backing vocals for Chaka Khan, who she names as one of her biggest inspirations.
Kyshona will be joined by singers Nickie Conley and Jannelle Means.
