Roots of Music Program (RoMP)

Bringing the world of music to students!
A semester-long course that teaches anchor concepts like rhythm, melody and dynamics through the exploration of music and cultures of West Africa, the United States and Mexico.

In the semester-long Roots of Music Program (RoMP) course designed for third and fourth graders, students acquire knowledge of core music concepts like rhythm, melody and dynamics while exploring the musical traditions of West Africa, the United States and Mexico. Through a combination of interactive music concerts, in-school lessons and project-based STEAM activities, students gain hands-on experience in music while also developing cultural literacy and empathy. The program culminates in a recital, where students showcase their learning.

While RoMP lessons are led by a trained MTM teaching artist, the program is further supported by classroom teachers who also receive professional development and resources to enhance their classroom instruction. Integrating music education with geography, STEAM support, global history and cultural sensitivity. RoMP is a comprehensive program that fosters a deeper understanding of music, culture and history, enriching students’ academic and social-emotional growth.
