Girl playing the drum at MTM's workshop at White Point Family Literacy NightLast month, Grand Vision Foundation’s Meet the Music (MTM) education program delivered a music and reading workshop at White Point Elementary’s Family Literacy Night. Students and parents explored how singing, rhythm and movement can make reading at home more interactive and engaging.

MTM brings high-quality music education to over 2,000 elementary school students each year in the LA Harbor area and beyond. Students learn a range of musical genres, instruments and cultural traditions that encourage lifelong appreciation for the arts. GVF hosts three of our MTM programs at White Point: Strings in Schools (violin), Percussion in Schools and Keys of Inspiration (piano).

At Family Literacy Night, MTM teaching artists led a reading of the children’s book Drum City by Thea Guidone. Over twenty students and their families used drums, voices and body percussion to practice sight words, rhyming and multisyllabic words, strengthening their reading and comprehension skills—no musical training required!

MTM team members also answered questions and offered advice on how music can foster a love of reading at home.

Grand Vision Foundation is proud to partner with White Point Elementary. We look forward to continuing to inspire literacy through the power of music!
