SUMMARY:Saging the WorldFilm Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Earth Day for the world premiere of Saging the World. This film spotlights the ecological and cultural issues intertwined with white sage\, centering the voices of Native advocates who have long protected and cherished this plant. \n“Saging” has become common in movies\, TV shows\, social media\, and cleansing rituals –people burning sage bundles in the hope of purifying space and clearing bad energy. Instead of healing\, the appropriated use of saging in popular culture is having a harmful effect. Indigenous communities have tended a relationship with white sage for thousands of generations. White sage (Salvia apiana) only occurs in southern California and northern Baja California\, Mexico. Today\, poachers are stealing metric tons of this plant from the wild to supply international demand. \nThe screening will include a panel discussion with Native advocates from the film\, as well as a white sage plant giveaway.\nThe short documentary was produced by Rose Ramirez\, Deborah Small\, and the California Native Plant Society to foster awareness and inspire action for white sage. \nThis Earth Day\, go from smudging to seeding as we come together to see plants not just as “resources\,” but as “relationships.” For more information on the documentary and campaign\, visit cnps.org/sagingtheworld. \nThe event is sponsored by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy\, Theodore Payne Foundation\, California Botanic Garden and Tree of Life. \nCovid-19 Safety at the Warner Grand Theatre\nAttendees will be asked to wear masks at this event regardless of vaccination status.

SUMMARY:Willie Watson
DESCRIPTION:This concert is Sold Out! Please see the Grand Annex calendar for other shows you might enjoy. \n“There’s so much beauty in this old music\, and it affects me on a deep level. It moves me and inspires me. I heard Leadbelly singing with the Golden Gate Quartet and it sounded fantastic\, and I thought\, ‘I want to do that.” ~ Willie Watson \nFor nearly two decades\, Willie Watson (formerly of Grammy-winning roots-rock band Old Crow Medicine Show) has made modern folk music rooted in older traditions. Watson is a folksinger in the classic sense: a singer\, storyteller\, and traveler\, with a catalog of songs that bridge the gap between the past and present. He acts as a modern interpreter of older songs\, passing along his own version of the music that came long before him. \nWith a quick vibrato and rich range\, he breathes new life into classic songs like Samson and Delilah. He’s a balladeer when he sings Gallows Pole\, a bluesman when he performs When My Baby Left Me. Dry Bones finds him crooning and hollering\, while Take This Hammer\, has Watson singing to the heavens. \nOpener: Honey Whiskey Trio \nThe beloved three sisters in song return to the Annex stage this Saturday as the opening act! Los Angeles-based Honey Whiskey Trio tells stories through song and stomp\, highlighting the musical traditions of American Folk Music. \nCovid-19 Safety at the Grand Annex\nAs of 3/25/22 Masks are strongly recommended for all\, we ask that those who have not been vaccinated wear masks.
