DESCRIPTION:The South Bay Wind Ensemble returns to the stage with “In Space\, A Symphonic Concert.” Under the direction of Maestro Steven Allen Fox\, with Assistant Conductor\, Matthew Visk\, the concert promises to be an exciting journey across the universe\, featuring music from Star Wars: The Force Awakens\, Star Trek: First Contract\, Close Encounters of the Third Kind\, and Gustav Holts’ The Planets. \nTravel on a tour of our solar system with South Bay Wind Ensemble. Holst’s “The Planets” is now over 100 years old\, but the music remains timeless and relevant. It begins with the powerful and bombastic Mars\, progressing to the soulful Venus\, and on through Mercury\, Jupiter\, Saturn\, Uranus\, and Neptune. Alas\, poor Pluto wasn’t discovered until after The Planets were completed. And now it’s not even a planet.\n\n\nFor more than 50 years\, John Williams has been synonymous with the movies. We are excited to present two of his most enduring themes. From 1977 is the incredibly alien “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” And almost 40 years later\, the exciting closing moments from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” We also have the main theme from “First Contact” by Jerry Goldsmith\, in case you prefer Trek over Wars.

SUMMARY:☆ Patrick Landeza & Sons Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar
DESCRIPTION:☆ Part of the Roots & Rambles concert series. \nHot off the heels of his historic second Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award win (Hawaiian GRAMMY)\, Patrick Landeza heads to The Annex with his new musical trio Patrick Landeza & Sons. The group includes star Hawaiian steel guitar player Justin Firmeza and PJ Landeza on bass guitar. Come celebrate an evening of Hawaiian music\, hula and aloha! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Patrick Landeza & SonsA native Hawaiian who was raised on the mainland\, Patrick Landeza found his roots in the music shared with him by his mother\, Frances Kawaipūloʻu Kuakini OʻSullivan Landeza. The songs that she taught him were songs that she learned growing up in Hoʻolehua on the island of Molokaʻi. The music filled cultural gaps left by his childhood in California\, providing a firm foundation upon which he built his musical career. The music he grew up listening to connecting Patrick with some of kī hōʻalu’s (slack key guitar’s) most legendary names: Cyril Pahinui\, Raymond Kāne\, George Kuo\, and Dennis Kamakahi. Under their tutelage\, Patrick’s style of music became firmly rooted in slack-key. Now a father of 5\, it’s Landeza’s turn to follow in his mother’s footsteps and share the songs of his heritage with the next generation. His son\, PJ Landeza and his hānai son\, Justin Firmeza regularly tour with Patrick. \nPre-concert Workshop at 7PM: Slack & Steel: Hawaiian Steel and Slack Key Guitar Workshop w/ Justin Firmeza and Patrick LandezaJustin and Patrick demonstrate the dynamics of these two unique Hawaiian styles of playing; steel guitar and slack key guitar. This will be both a hands-on and wala`au (discussion) session so feel free to bring an instrument. Justin Firmeza is one of the young up-and-coming steel players. His unique style blends jazz and western swing along with sacred steel. Justin is currently a jazz major at San Jose State University and teaches music part-time at Moreau Catholic High School. \n☆ Roots & Rambles is a three-concert series featuring musicians dedicated to the preservation\, artistry and evolution of folk and traditional music in the United States. Each concert includes a workshop highlighting an aspect of the performer’s craft. Made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:DCR Pollock & Izzi Ray
DESCRIPTION:Alt-rock singer-songwriter DCR Pollock\, an LA local\, has made a name for himself by creating music with a biographical approach that resonates with the masses. His latest release ‘Bark!\,’ is about his struggles with loneliness and vulnerability. “Curled up on a van floor\, cut off at the corner store. You know I’ve never felt so damn alive\, or alone before\,” he sings. \nOther People Records picked up his label\, creating his debut album earlier this year\, Call the Dogs Off. Pollock draws on his experience as a laborer to build his music\, “How much time do you think I’ve lost? Just staring at a warehouse clock. Move that barrel\, lift that box. Hell\, man\, it’s a job. Don’t you worry\, come next year. We’ll be on our feet\, I swеar. Are these dreams or they prayers?” Pollock will be performing songs from his latest album at the Grand Annex with his full band. \nIndie pop singer Izzi Ray performs emotional melodies from her latest album Self Untitled. Born in Southern California and raised in Northwest Montana\, her artistry reflects the contrast in her upbringing. From a sentiment of not knowing where to belong\, she creates music aspiring to make beautiful things as reminders to continue to breathe\, grow\, love\, and savor each day. Drawn to emotional melodies and expressive production\, her writing is a breath of fresh air\, rich with therapeutic reflections. Izzi has released four full-length albums\, which she calls an “autobiographical snapshot of the season of life in which it was made.”

SUMMARY:☆ Honey Whiskey Trio 10 Year Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:Advance online & phone sales are closed. Tickets available at the door. $28 cash\, $33 credit. \nConcert is at 8:30pm. Doors open at 6:45pm for the pre-concert “Body Rhythms” Workshop which will start a little after 7:00pm.  \nThe beloved three “sisters in song” return to the Annex stage to bring you rowdy tunes and at least one murder ballad with masterful harmonies\, stomp and traditional instrumentation. Los Angeles based Honey Whiskey Trio tells stories through song and stomp\, highlighting the musical traditions of American Folk Music. \nAlumni of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University\, Long Beach\, Courtney Politano\, Ann Louise Thaiss and Christina Wilson began singing together in each other’s living rooms as an emotional and musical release. In 2013\, after seeing the impact of their music on the contemporary A cappella community\, these “sisters in song” solidified their style as American Folk and picked up instruments to further enhance their vocally driven sound. \nToday their passion for music education\, community outreach\, and singing unapologetically continues to drive them. They create\, arrange\, and explore music from the front porches\, music halls\, and hymn books of early America\, sharing it with students\, adults\, and life-long music lovers across the United States. \n“Their sound is intoxicating… To simply classify this trio as folk\, bluegrass\, or jazz would be to do them a great disservice. What I hear is great music and what I see is great joy.” – Bluegrass Spin \nPre-concert Body Rhythms Workshop at 7PM \n☆ Part of the Roots & Rambles concert series. \nConcert 8:30PM \nTickets include the workshop.

SUMMARY:Lizzie No &🍷Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Performing as a trio with John Calvin Abney on guitar and Nelson Williams on upright bass. \nLizzie No is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter\, harpist and guitarist\, guest performer with the Black Opry Revue and co-host of the Basic Folk podcast. Lizzie is a winner of the American Songwriter Magazine Lyrics Contest. She has showcased at Newport Folk Fest\, Americanafest\, South by Southwest\, and the Mile of Music Festival. \n“We are thrilled to bring musicians-on-the-rise like Lizzie No to the Annex\,” said Taran Schindler\, Deputy & Artistic Director of the Grand Vision Foundation. “When I first heard her pertinent lyrics delivered with such sincerity\, they reminded me of activist folk musicians like Pete Seeger or Joan Baez. I also really like that she has taken the harp\, a traditionally classical instrument\, and turned it into the instrument of a singer-songwriter.” \nNo established herself as one of the most exciting new voices in indie folk music with her 2017 debut album “Hard Won.” She followed up the album with the release of “Sundown\,” a benefit track for Black Lives Matter and her second album “Vanity\,”(2019) was a hit at college radio stations across the country. Lizzie has played with Iron & Wine\, Aida Victoria\, and as a part of the Black Opry Revue; a touring revue formed to raise awareness for Black musicians in Americana music. \n🍷Pre-Concert Wine Tastings: 7-7:45PM requires an additional ticket. Wine tastings are $16 or free for members at the Friend\, Committee of $200\, VIP Circle\, Premium\, and Angel levels. Sommelier Jean Philippe Molinari will be presenting a selection of fine wines. JP’s career in the wine business began in France. Here in the U.S.\, he honed his skills and love of wine to become a sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers. You’ll enjoy both his expertise and his ridiculous amount of charm. \nLizzie No at the Grand Annex Music Hall\, Published January 26\, 2023
